10 Snowlight My arms and legs sweep the snow in arcs. An angel has fallen here with a thud, embraced by gravity, or, perhaps, she is what’s left of me, when, lips stiff, elbows locked, I raise myself from the snow. My mother’s shadow erases the seamed and jagged wings, snuffing out this epidemic of lightheartedness. As some sort of solution I shout—Look! I’m hatching great angels! My imagination sinks, as usual, under the weight of my mother’s sky. I stamp the snow where the angel in me burrows with her awkward wings.
