THE INDEPENDENT IRISH STATE that came into existence following the Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921 was known as the Irish Free State, or Saorstat Eireann, until the name was changed to Ireland, or Eire, in the 1937 Constitution. In the interest of simplicity, the terms Ireland and Irish are used throughout.
