93. Seal of Saadia Son of Eleazar

*S · Saadye · bar · Eliyezer

Dimensions: 30 mm. Impression.

Location: Bavarian Main State Archives, Munich, Regensburg City Doc. 3046.

This is one of the best-preserved Hebrew seals known to this writer. The inscription is between heavy beaded lines, starting with a Latin S after a rosette and then proceeding counterclockwise in Hebrew. The field consists of a heraldic five-petaled wild rose on a shield. The lines filling the space between the outer edge of the shield and the inner beaded line of the inscription make this seal an example of high craftsmanship. Since this is the Saadia who appears several years later with a Hebrew rather than a Gothic inscription, one can surmise that the smudged device on the earlier seal was indeed the representation of a rose. The five-petaled rose was a common decorative device in medieval manuscripts, sometimes associated with the lily.

Pledge document from Regensburg, March 17, 1391, sealed by Saadia son of Eleazar and Disslob daughter of Moses. Bavarian Main State Archives at Munich, Regensburg City Doc. 3046.

The document to which No. 93 is affixed, illustrated here, is dated March 17, 1391, almost seven years after the document to which seal No. 92 is attached. The German document calls Saadia “Sadyon”; the Munich archives list the name as “Sadian,” following the spelling in the 1384 document.
