Seal of Lord Busso Gruelhut, Knight of the Order of St. John, 1305. Formerly at the City Archives of Berlin.

This large seal shows in the field a Jew’s hat on whose tip a bird with open wings is perched. The hat has a crossed chinstrap hanging from it. Above the hat to the left is a crescent moon and to the right an eight-pointed star. The Hebrew inscription is round, between border lines. The seal is attached to two documents, both still extant. The first document is dated May 1, 1297. The second document, on which the seal impression is much clearer, is dated December 4, 1302, and is illustrated here. The resemblance of the Jew’s hat with strap hanging below it to the one on the Augsburg Jewish community seal (No. 79) appended to a document dated 1298—almost precisely the same period—should be noted. The two cities are near each other, and the similarity of the seals is not accidental. (A Christian seal of Lord Busso Gruelhut of 1305 bearing a similar device is illustrated here for comparison.)
