9. Seal of Purnel Son of Matthias

Dimensions: 31 mm.

Location: unknown.

Bibliography: King, 1884b.

C. W. King, who had a fertile imagination, also published another short article on a presumed Norman Jewish seal. Here we are informed of a pewter seal with a fleur-de-lys in its center and a legend: S. PVRNEL. FIL. R. MATATE. The lettering might also be read S. PARNEL. FIL. R. BATATE. We are told that the R. stands for “Rabbi” and that therefore the seal is Jewish—and Norman Jewish at that, based on the style of the letters. The so-called R. is probably a misreading, and there is nothing about this seal to indicate it is Jewish.
