In Hollywood it’s okay to see a black masquerade as a southern bigot if she’s a good cook. Meanwhile as her guilt accumulates Mrs. Drayton, in true Christian spirit, ignores the beam in her eye, and berates with displaced hates from this triumvirate her white, prejudiced neighbor for the mote in hers. A perfect solution to sin. She puts it on the back of a scapegoat then sends her to the wilderness. There in this cast-off is castigated in place of an out-group. Thus, the Draytons distance themselves from their working bias, save face and become paradigms of tolerance to boot! Forgive my wry hypothesis while probing where the woman’s coming from, but aren’t these the roots of prejudice? Projecting biases deemed troublesome onto safe targets may win accolades from hypocrites, but only love persuades. ...
