Editorial Mohiuddin Munawar Series Editor Ecovision World Monograph Series President, AEHMS Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Burlington, Ontario, Canada L7R 4A6 munawarm@dfo-mpo.gc.ca A working group called “Sediment Quality Assessment: SQA” was established in 1992 by the AEHMS to develop a network for better communication, exchange of research ideas and technology among sediment researchers. The SQA working group was also mandated to organize and facilitate integrated and in-depth publications focusing on sediments. SQA meetings are highly successful, productive, and attended by active researchers. The success of prior SQA meetings is apparent from the resulting publications in the form of special issues and books organized by AEHMS. The SQA 1 symposium in Goteborg, Sweden resulted in a peer-reviewed book (Munawar and Dave, 1996) under the Ecovision World Monograph Series as well as a special issue of the journal: Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management (AEHM) in 1995. SQA 2 and 3 symposia in Pallanza, Italy and Amsterdam, The Netherlands, respectively also generated special issues of AEHM during 1999 and 2000. The fourth international symposium on Sediment Quality Assessment (SQA4) titled Approaches, Insights and Technology for the 21st Century was held on the banks of ancient Lake Biwa, Otsu, near Kyoto, Japan from October 24-27, 2000. This conference was sponsored jointly by the Lake Biwa Research Institute and the Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society. In addition to exposing all participants to complexities of science, our Japanese hosts and their associates provided a wonderful taste of Japan during the conference. The lake, buildings, gardens, temples and castles, and the foods of Japan were laid out for all to partake – a feast for the senses. At mid-symposium, participants took to the water and motored up Lake Biwa to Chidubushima (Bamboo Island) a small island of scenic beauty and historic interest in the north of Lake Biwa. Following the island trip all participants visited the new Lake Biwa Museum, largely devoted to the lake and its inhabitants. The symposium program was arranged in nine themes, each theme was highlighted by a keynote presentation. The program consisted of 5 keynote lectures, 38 oral and 19 poster presentations. The manuscripts included in this book originated from the SQA4. The response to the book was overwhelming since a large number xii of manuscripts were submitted. Following the peer review, the accepted manuscripts underwent meticulous revisions and technical/linguistic editing as per the standard guidelines of the AEHMS. Twenty two manuscripts have been arranged in to the following themes reflecting the Otsu symposium: • Overview of bioassessment and management of sediments • Monitoring sediment contamination: Spatial and temporal trends • Bioavailability, toxicity, risk assessment and treatment • Sediment-water interactions and eutrophication This compendium of manuscripts present for the first time a unique blend and integration of science and technology from countries spanning the globe, including Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Sweden, Japan, India, Italy, South Korea, The Netherlands and the United States. We hope that this publication will be beneficial to students, managers and researchers alike in the management of sediment and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. I take this opportunity to thank the Symposium Committee particularly Drs. M. Kumagai, T. Murphy, D.F. Malley, S. G. Lawrence and C.
