Abstract

This article focuses on the poem “Sevmorput′” in Axmatova’s berated cycle “From the cycle ‘Glory to peace.’” High sources suggested that the poet compose panegyrics to Stalin in honor of his 70th birthday as a means of alleviating her arrested son’s plight. Outwardly Axmatova produced glowing panegyrics to Stalin’s grandiose projects and accomplishments and to Soviet life, yet encoded within the poems lies the dichotomous truth that Axmatova refused to ignore, even at peril to herself. Professor Lunt, who had worked with codes in World War II, would have appreciated Axmatova’s daring deception in these poems, of which one is presented here.
