64 The Tomcat and the Fox 40. There lived and dwelt this peasant. He had a cat, but here’s the misfortune : It was a loser. The peasant got tired of it. The peasant thought and thought, then took the cat, put it in a sack, tied it up, and carried it into the woods. He got to the woods and tossed it there; let it perish! The tom walked and walked about and came upon a hut in which a forester was living. He climbed up into the attic and stretched himself out. Whenever he wanted to eat, he’d go through the woods, catching mice and birds, eat his fill, and then back into the attic. And he had little woe! Once the cat set out on a walk, and he met a fox. The fox caught sight of the cat and was astonished:“However many years I’ve lived in the forest , such a beast I’ve never, ever seen.” The fox bowed low to the tom and asked,“Tell me, young man, who are you and how do you chance to be walking about here, and with what name shall you be known?” The cat raised up its fur and said,“I am sent from the Siberian forests to be your bailiff, and I am to be called Kotofei Ivanovich.”“Oho, Kotofei Ivanovich,” said the fox,“I knew nothing of you, I was unaware.Well, you must come be my guest.” The cat went to the fox’s. She led him into her den and began treating him with various bits of wild game, and then she questioned further:“Well, Kotofei Ivanovich, are you married or single?”“Single,”said the cat.“And I, a vixen, I am a maiden. Marry me!” The cat agreed, and they began their feasting and merrymaking. The next day, the fox set out to obtain supplies so that there would be something for her young husband and her to live on. The cat remained at home. The fox was running along, when she chanced to meet a wolf who began joking about with her. “Where have you got to, my friend? We’ve searched all the dens, but haven’t seen you anywhere.” “Oh, stop it, you fool! What are you on about? I used to be a maiden vixen, but now I’m a married wife.” “And whom did you marry, Lizaveta Ivanovna?” “Have you really not heard? A bailiff has been sent us from the Siberian forests, Kotofei Ivanovich. I am now the bailiff ’s wife.” The Tomcat and the Fox h 65 “No, I hadn’t heard, Lizaveta Ivanovna. How does one go about taking a look at him?” “Whew, my Kotofei Ivanovich is an angry one. If someone is not to his liking, he eats them up. Look now, you just prepare a ram and bring it to him with a bow. Put the ram down and disappear so that he doesn’t see you, or else, Brother, it’ll be too bad for you!” The wolf ran off after a ram. The fox walked on and met a bear. The bear started to joke around. “What are you on about, you fool, you pigeon-toed Mishka; don’t touch me! I used to be a maiden vixen but now I’m a married wife.” “And whom did you marry, Lizaveta Ivanovna?” “The one sent to us from the Siberian forests as bailiff. He’s called Kotofei Ivanovich. That’s the one I married.” “Would it not be possible to take a look at him, Lizaveta Ivanovna?” “Whew, my Kotofei Ivanovich is an angry one. If someone is not to his liking, he right away eats them up. You go and prepare a bull and bring it to him with a bow. The wolf intends to bring a ram. See that you put the bull down and then disappear so that Kotofei Ivanovich doesn’t see you, or else, Brother, it’ll be too bad for you!” The bear dragged himself off after a bull. The wolf brought the ram, removed the skin, and stood there in thought. He looked, and there came the bear with a bull. “Greetings, brother Mikhailo Ivanych!” “Greetings, brother Levon! Well, have you seen the fox and her husband ?” “No, Brother, I’ve been waiting for a long time.” “Go on then, call.” “No, I won’t go, Mikhailo Ivanych. You go, you’re braver than I am.” “No, brother Levon, I...
