xiii Acknowledgements The field research for this book was approved by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and sponsored through Airlangga University with the help of Professor Soetandyo Wignosubroto. Without Professor Soetandyo’s support my research in Surabaya could not have begun. The same can be said for my friend Dr Bambang Heru Santosa, who welcomed me into his family during my first visit to Surabaya in 1997 and during the initial weeks of my return in 1998. I am greatly indebted to him and his family for giving me a start in Surabaya. A long-serving member of Indonesia’s Central Bureau of Statistics, regular newspaper columnist and expert on Surabaya’s industrial structure , Bambang also shared with me his knowledge of Surabaya’s economy and introduced me to his colleagues at the Bureau of Statistics in Surabaya, particularly Pak Nyoto Sadeli and his staff. I cannot thank them enough for their invaluable assistance and friendship. Any doubts I had about embarking upon this research and writing journey were quickly erased whenever I thought about my time living in the kampung of Dinoyo. It gave me some of the dearest friendships of my life. These friends were my neighbours, and much that is contained in this book grew out of my time with them. They gave unconditionally and adopted me into their lives. I miss them greatly and have lived with them in my mind with every word of this book. They breathed life into my research to make this book possible . My greatest debt and sense of gratitude is owed to them. A number of academics provided invaluable support and advice. Ken Young provided the initial guidance and intellectual breadth that enabled a mature and critical appreciation of the material in this book. It has been a trying, yet invaluable learning experience to work so closely with him. He has contributed most to this book. I was fortunate to be able to consult at length with Johan Silas, the urban planner who has played a prominent role in Surabaya’s urban development. My friendship with Aris Mundayat of Gadjah Mada University, who stayed with me for two weeks during my initial fieldwork in 1998 and understands most about it, has been a continuing source of intellectual inspiration. Andreas Felix S.H., Yasson de Bani and Arief Mubin provided valuable information and archival resources as well as intellectual perspectives and friendship.
