vii Acknowledgements A ll the chapters in this book, although they have not appeared in print elsewhere, originated from papers that were presented at various conferences. In the process of revising them for the purpose of this book, I enormously benefitted from comments by participants who were the first audience and peerservices during the conferences at which the papers were presented. Chapter One is based on a paper initially presented at a symposium on Christianity and Ethnicity organized by St. Paul’s University in May 2010. Chapter Two was presented at a FOCUS consultation on mission during their inaugural lecturers of the Institute for Mission Dialogue in February 2010. Chapter three is a revised version of a paper presented at the consultation of the Protestant Institution on Theological Education in EastAfrica organized by the Faculty of Protestant Theology and Religious Studies of the Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences in Butare, Rwanda in May 2010. Chapter four is a revision of a paper presented at a symposium ofTheology and Society, Nairobi in October 2005, which in turn, was the revised version of a paper published as, ‘Impact of Pentecostalism on the Mainline Churches in Kenya,” in a Journal: Encounter 1.3 (2003), pp.28-41. I am grateful to those whose invitations first afforded the opportunity to research on the topics that have here evolved into these chapters. Many colleagues and friends read part or whole of these chapters. I am particularly indebted to my colleague and teacher the Rev. Dr. Sammy Githuku for his valuable comments on viii chapter one, and the Rev. C.B. Peter for reading and editing the entire book. I must express my profound gratitude to Dr. Timothy Wachira, who graciously agreed to read and write a foreword for this work. I am also very grateful to all my theology students whose critical search for knowledge and theological conversations, in and out of class, have continued to sharpen my thoughts on matters of God and life.
