Conclusion CHAPTER SIX Conclusion C hristianity is widely followed inAfrica yetAfrican Christianity is generally ‘superficial’and suffers from serious disconnects at various levels. Given that the phenomenal numerical growth has failed to translate into maturity of faith and theological strength, there is then the need to seriously revisit the ways the ‘churches’ have conducted their mission and taught theology. African Christianity needs a methodological framework that can effectively aid theological reflection, ethical and doctrinal demands of the Christian faith, the interpretation of scriptures, and of how the message of the gospel can correctly be appropriated and applied in the face of varied contextual realities that face theAfrican Christian on daily basis. There is need for systematic reflection on the original sources of Christianity, with the aim to generate a genuine conversation between text and context. The outcome of such conversational engagement is hoped to lead to the realization of an orthodox and contextually relevant theology and a biblically based mission, which can effectively address the pastoral concerns of the church in fruitful ways that can bring about the abundance of life that the Gospel promises. To aid our explorations in this direction, we have proposed a conversational model of doing theology. The conversational model suggests a reflective engagement at various levels, including conversations between church and academic as well an inter-church dialogue. It is hoped that such engagement will inspire exchange, understanding African Christianity: The Stranger Within and models for practical Christian living that integrates doctrine, ethics and such other practical demands of the Gospel. Sound theological education, and workable mission strategies guided by biblical principles can go a long way in shaping Christianity that can bring about the realization of societal transformation and abundance of life. Pentecostalism seems to be beginning to shape African Christianity in a big way. With its message of liberation and emphases on heaven but also earthly benefits of the Gospel, it carries a great potential to inspire a new social vision that can help in the realization of societal transformation for peace, prosperity, social justice and equity, security and holistic human progress in Africa. 108 ...
