ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Research workshops are different from conferences and seminars in that the participants actually 'do' something and to help them work requires much logistic support. It is, first and foremost, a pleasure to thank the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Wang Gungwu, for his support of the workshop by providing funds which allowed planning to proceed, boats to be booked and encouraged participants to believe it would take place and, thus, to plan to attend. This grant, supplemented by another from the Agriculture and Fisheries Department of the Hong Kong Government, through the good offices of the Director, Dr L.H.Y. Lee, meant that final planning could proceed. Thanks are also due to those fund-awarding bodies for supporting the aims of the Workshop by providing travel and subsistence grants for the delegates from overseas to attend. Especial thanks are due to the British Council for funding the participation of Professor R. Seed and Dr C.A. Richardson from Great Britain, the Carlsberg Foundation for funding the participation of Dr J. Knudsen and Dr K. Jensen from Denmark and to the Director and trustees of the K.C.
