PREFACE A well known Chinese idiom states: 'seeing once is better than hearing a hundred times'. From our teaching experience, we have certainly found that 'seeing' is the most effective way for medical students to learn about child health and clinical paediatrics. In situations when the real clinical condition is not available for viewing, a good picture is the best alternative. Many excellent paediatric atlases have bel'n published, and some have been very popular, but to our knowledge this atlas is the first one in which all the illustrations are of Chinese infants. Whenever possible, we have tried to point out the ethnic difference which may exist in certain areas. It is also interesting to note that in general, the Iwalth problems seen in Chinese infants are similar to those reported from other geographical regions. In our endeavour to include representative' photographs, we are aware that some are not of ideal quality. It is our hope that this atlas should be useful to medical students and all medical and health workers who p!'()vide health care for infants, and Chinese infants in particular. Anita M.e.
