1 KEYNOTE ADDRESS “SUN YAT-SEN AND THE ORIGINS OF MODERN CHINESE POLITICS” Wang Gungwu ProfessorLeoSuryadinataremindedmethatwhenIfirstwroteaboutSun Yat-senin1952,itwastwenty-sevenyearsafterhisdeathandjustoverforty yearsafterthe1911Revolution.SomeofthepeopleIspoketoatthetime hadknownSunYat-senandtheyspokeofhimwithrespectwhileadmitting thattheydidnotfinditeasytounderstandhim.Washeafailedpolitician butagreatleader?Nowhehasbeendeadforeighty-fiveyearsandweare commemorating100yearsoftheRevolutionthathewillalwaysbeidentified with.Wenowknowmuchmoreabouthim.Manyscholarshaveworkedon hislifeandworkandeachhassoughttoevaluatehisplaceinhistoryand especiallyhisroleinthatRevolution.Ihavelittletoaddtowhathasbeen published.ButthereissomethingIwouldliketorevisit.Ioncedescribed SunYat-senasChina’sfirstmodernpoliticianwhenheemergedasaleader ofarevolutionattheendofthenineteenthcentury.Whatkindofpolitics didhepromote?Inwhatwayswerehispoliticsmodern? Modernityisaconceptthathasbeenmuchdebatedabout,especially whenjuxtaposedwiththeword“tradition”.Mostofthedebateslinkedwith WesternattitudestowardsChinaarenotrelevanthere.Theword“modern” wasfirstusedintheWesttomarktheprogressthatfollowedthestruggles againsttraditionthatitspeopleswereengagedin.Itwasnotawordapplied 00dSunYatSenKeynote.indd1 8/24/112:11:37PM 2 Wang Gungwu toAsia.ForAsianleaders,Westernpowerwasthereality,andthequestion washowfartowesternizeiftheyweretodefendtheircountriesagainst beingdominatedorworse,eitherconqueredorcolonized.Thefirstdecisive responsehadcomefromtheyoungJapanesesamuraiwhohelpedtooverthrow TokugawaShogunate.Theywerepreparedtogoallouttolearneverything theyneededfromtheWestinordertofightback.OtherAsianleaderswere lessreadytowesternizetothatextentandcontinuedfortherestofthe nineteenthcenturytorejectanyideathattheirestablishedwaysneededto bechangedbyimitatingtheWest.Iftheythoughtaboutbeingmodernat all,itwasintermsoflearningtoactliketheWest. TheJapanesewerethefirsttorealizethatthechallengetheyfacedwas notonlysuperiormilitarypoweroreveneconomicpowerbutalsoasystem ofideasthatwasfundamentallydifferentfromtheirtraditionsofpolitics andgovernment.Ittookseveraldecadesbeforewhattheylearntprovedto besuccessfulincatapultingthecountrytobeamodernpoweralongside theWesternPowers.SunYat-senwasborntwoyearsbeforetheMeiji Restoration,in1866,andgrewupduringthefirstdecadesofJapan’sroad tothatmodernity.ManylikehimwhogrewupinthecoastalareasofChina opentoWesterntrade,aswellasthoseborninEuropeancolonies,wereready tounderstandhowtheJapanesesawtheWestdifferently. FortheseChinese,thekeyfeatureofJapan’squestforpowerwasthe dramaticandforcefulwayitsyoungleadersoverthrewthefeudalShogunate andrestoredcentralauthoritytotheEmperor.BythetimeSunYat-sentook upthecauseofrebellioninthe1880sand1890s,manyChineseleaderswere awareofwhatJapanhadachieved.Theywereimpressedbythecarefulway theJapanesestudiedEuropeanmethodsofmilitary,economicandpolitical reform,certainlymuchmoresystematicallythantheChineseeverdid.But fewthoughtthatthenewkindsofpoliticsbeingpractised,throughpolitical partiesestablishedinimitationofthoseinBritainandGermany,wereinany wayresponsibleforJapan’ssuccesses.Themostradicalmandarinswerestill calibratingwhattheythoughtweretheoptimalWesternmethodstheQing imperialsystemneededtobecomestrongagain.Nonewhodidthatwere describedatthetimeasapolitician,leastofsomeonemodern. WhyshouldSunYat-senbeconsideredamodernpolitician?Whynot KangYouweiandhisyoungfollowerswhoactuallyreachedpositionsof powerin1898and,afterthefailureoftheirattemptsatreform,organizeda politicalpartycalledtheBaohuangdang(保皇党,ProtectEmperorSociety)?
