245 11 HISTORICAL LINKAGE AND POLITICAL CONNECTION: COMMEMORATION AND REPRESENTATION OF SUN YAT-SEN AND THE 1911 REVOLUTION IN CHINA AND SOUTHEAST ASIA, 1946–20101 Wu Xiao An Introduction Overcenturies,China-SoutheastAsianinteractionshavebeenbestmanifested throughthetributarysystemfromaboveandtheOverseasChineseor ChineseOverseasfrombelow.However,overdecadesafterWorldWarII, thelinkagesofthetwowereovershadowedbytheimaginedChinathreaton theonehandandsuspicionsoftheloyaltyofOverseasChineseontheother becauseoftheColdWarandnation-buildingprocesses.Onlywiththeendof ColdWarandtherapidriseofChina,ChinaandSoutheastAsiahavestarted tobereconnectedwitheachothersubstantiallyandatanunprecedented rate.Fromthedustypast,thelong-neglectedprominentfigureslikeAdmiral ZhengHeandDrSunYat-senhaveeventuallybeenrediscoveredforthat 11SunYatSen.indd245 8/24/113:02:48PM 246 Wu Xiao An purpose.ZhengHe’scaseservesperfectlytorefutetheChinathreat,while SunYat-sen’slegacyproudlyexhibitshowNanyangandNanyangChinese contributetothemakingofamodernChina.InSoutheastAsia,neglected memorialhallsandtemplesarehencerenovatedandrebuiltonthedustyand evendamagedsiteswithgovernmentfundingandprivatedonations.Likewise, therehavebeensymposiums,filmsandexhibitionsonthesesubjects.Such developmentisanamazingcontrastwiththesocio-politicallandscapejust afewdecadesago. HowandwhywereSunYat-senandthe1911Revolutionrepresentedin ChinaandSoutheastAsiaunderchangingsituations?Howandwhywerethey imaginedandcommemorateddifferentlyindifferentperiods?Basedonthe reportsinthePeople’sDailyfrom1946to2010inChina,thechapter,while notstudyingSunYat-senandthe1911Revolutionperse,triestoconstruct andreconstructtheircommemorationandrepresentationinChinaand SoutheastAsiaandtheirdynamics. Sun Yat-sen and Nanyang SunYat-sen’srevolutionaryactivitiesandlegacyinNanyangshouldat leastincludethreeaspects:(1)directly,hisownphysicalinvolvements; (2)indirectly,hisfellowcompradors’activitiesunderhisleadership;and (3)theactivitiesafterthe1911Revolution.AsDuaraargues,itwasonlyafter the1911RevolutionthatSunYat-sen’slegacyandinfluencesinNanyang hadstartedtobedominantspirituallyandconsolidatedinstitutionallyby bypassingtheforcesofpro-Qingbaohuanghui保皇会[Associationforthe ProtectionoftheEmperor].2 Likewise,interestinglyinthecaseofChina,it wasonlyfollowingthedeathofSunYat-senin1925thathewasmystically worshippedinmodernChinesepoliticsandsocietywhenhewasconstructed asanationaliconbytheKMTregime.Becauseoftimeconstraint,this chapterwouldfocusonhisphysicalpresenceinNanyang.Intermsof financialandhumanresources,thereisnodoubtthatNanyangChinese contributedgreatlytothe1911Revolution.However,itistheUnitedStates, Japan,HongKong,andevenEurope,ratherthanNanyang,thatSunYat-sen hadphysicallystayedlongerandbenefitedmostspiritually.Itwasnotuntil themiddleoftheyear1900thatNanyangstartedtobecomeSunYat-sen’s mainrevolutionarybases.ThereasonthatSunYat-senwasforcedtoturnto Nanyangashismainrevolutionarybasesinsteadwasduetothedeportation ofSunbytheJapaneseGovernmentandthegeographicalproximityof NanyangtoSouthChina,notably,Yunnan,GuangxiandGuangdong. 11SunYatSen.indd246 8/24/113:02:48PM [3.139.82.23] Project MUSE (2024-04-23 15:26 GMT) Sun Yat-sen and the 1911 Revolution in China and Southeast Asia 247 ForSunYat-sen,Nanyanghadtwosignificantdimensionsorsources forhisrevolutionarymobilization:onewasNanyangChinesecontributions tofund-raisingandorganizationalsupportunderpinnedbythecommon ethnicidentityandChinesenationalismintermsoftheanti-Manchuand anti-imperialistcause;theotherwaslocalnon-SoutheastAsianChinese nationalists,whowasinspiredandunitedbyAsianisminthelatenineteenth andearlytwentiethcenturiesduetothecommonAsiananti-colonisalism andAsiannationalistawakening.3 Fortheformer,Vietnam,Singaporeand Malaysiawerethethreemaintargets,andSaigon,Hanoi,Singaporeand PenangwereheadquartersforSun’sNanyangrevolutionaryorganizational activities.Forthelatter,SoutheastAsiannationalists,PhanBoiChauin Vietnam,Poncein...
