200 9 PATRIOTIC CHINESE WOMEN: FOLLOWERS OF SUN YAT-SEN IN DARWIN, AUSTRALIA Julia Martinez Thischapterexaminesthelivesoftheyoungmenandwomenwhoorganized theDarwinBranchoftheKuomintang(KMT)duringthe1920sand1930s, inparticularlookingattheroleofChinesewomeninpolitics.Theinfluence ofSunYat-senintheNanyangwasmostobviousduringtheperiodwhenthe childrenofthe1911Revolutionwereofanagetotakeuphisaimofmaking amodernChinesecommunity.In1925,whenSunYat-sendied,theexecutive membersoftheDarwinKMTwereagedbetweentwentyandthirty.They werewell-knownfiguresinthissmallnorthernAustralianport-townthat boastedaChinesepopulationofsome400people.Ifweweretojudgebythe survivingphotographstherewasacertainglamouraboutthemembersofthe KMT.Theydressedinthefashionablewesternclothesofthetime.Themen werephysicallyfit,beingkeenpromotersofsports.Theywerewell-educated, inbothEnglishandChinese,andwereeloquentpublicspeakersonmatters oflocal,nationalandinternationalsignificance.Theywere,onemightargue, theembodimentofSunYat-sen’smodernyoungChinese. Inthis1930weddingphotograph(seeFigure9.1),wecanseeChinMon Di,thepresidentoftheDarwinKMTwearingthetwelve-pointedwhitesun onhislapel.TotherightofthebridegroomisGeeMingKet,secretaryof KMTuntil1930.TotheleftofthebrideisSelinaHassan(neeLee),secretary ofKMTafter1930. 09SunYatSen.indd200 8/24/112:44:23PM Followers of Sun Yat-sen in Darwin, Australia 201 LikeSunYat-sen,andmanyotherNanyangChinese,theyoungChinese in Darwin were nominal Christians.1 There had been a shift towards ChristianityinDarwinduringthe1920s.Inthe1911census,mostChinese gavetheirreligionasConfucianismbutby1933only4percentfollowed Chinesetraditions,thoughitwascommonforpeopletoattendbothchurch andtemple.2 OneexampleofthischangewasthatsomeKMTmemberswere marriedintheCatholicChurchwithexecutivemembersactingasbestman andspeech-giver.3 ThemajorityoftheKMTofficialsspokeCantonesewithfamilies originatingfromGuangdongandHongKong,whiledialectgroupsincluded Hakka,SzeYapandHeung-san.4 NotallChineseinDarwinsupportedthe KMT.TheolderChinesemerchantsbelongedtotheWahOnSocietywhich survivedintothe1930sasarivalgrouptotheKMT.Inmanycasesitwas theirchildrenwhoweremembersofthenewKMT. TheKMTwasfirstestablishedinAustraliainSydneyin1920.5 By 1927,theyclaimedthat80percentofadultChineseresidentsinAustralia werefinancialmembersoftheKMTandby1929therewerefortybranches throughoutAustralia.6 TheDarwinbranchwasestablishedon5May1924.
