148 7 AN HISTORICAL TURNING POINT: THE 1911 REVOLUTION AND ITS IMPACT ON SINGAPORE’S CHINESE SOCIETY Ching Fatt Yong Introduction ChinesenationalisminSingaporebeganin1877withtheestablishmentof aChineseconsulate-general,thefirstinSoutheastAsianChinesehistory. From1877to1894,theemergentChinesenationalismwasmorecultural incontentwithConsul-GeneralTsoPingLung(1850–1924)playingan enlightenedbutpivotalroleinstimulatingtheintellectualawakeningamong theChinese-educatedimmigrantsandEnglish-educatedStraitsChinese. Duringhistermofoffice(1881–91),hepromotedaConfucianmovement, chaireddebatesamongtheStraitsChineseoncurrentaffairsandlectured theChineseimmigrantsonChinesecultureandcivilization.Besides,he personallyawardedstudentswhocomposedthebestessaysorclassical Chinesepoemsgradedbyhimself.CoupledwiththelateQing’sdiplomatic drivesandthesalesofQing’stitlesanddegreestothehigherechelonof theChinesesocietyforimprovedprestigeandsocialmobility,Tso’scultural endeavoursborefruitintheformofapro-Qing’sculturalnationalism. From1894to1911,thereblossomedforthapoliticalnationalismwith twodiverseandopposingstrains,oneledbyK’angYu-wei(1866–1929), apro-Qingandpro-monarchistreformistandtheotherbySunYat-sen (1866–1925),ananti-Qingrevolutionaryandastaunchrepublican.Both K’angandSunmadeSingaporeanimportantbaseinSoutheastAsiafor enlistingChinesesupportfortheirrespectivepoliticalcauses.Tothese ends,K’anghelpedtoorganizeasemi-secretsociety,thePaoHuangHui [EmperorProtectionSociety]in1900topromotehismovement,while SuninitiatedtheformationofaSingaporebranchoftheTongmenghui (TMH,theUnitedLeague)in1906torallypublicsupport.Bothsocieties utilizedprintmedia(suchasTMH’sChongShingYitPohversusreformists’ UnionTimes)topropagatetheirrespectiveideologieswhichoftenresulted inpoliticalpolemics,involvingsuchissuesasrevolutionandreformismas panaceaforChina’sproblems.Beinglargelyfromtheupperechelonsofthe mercantilesociety,K’ang’ssupportersmadetheSingaporeChineseChamber of Commerce (SCCC) its stronghold since its formation in 1906. By contrast,Sun’ssupporters,beinglesswell-establishedandprominent,found supportfromChineseoflowerclasses.Inaddition,theTMHhadanumber ofreadingrooms(suchastheSinChewReadingRoom,foundedin1903 andtheTungTehReadingRoom,formedin1911)asitsfrontorganizations. Thesereadingroomsservedasvenuesfordisseminatingrevolutionary ideologiesandrecruitmentofnewmembersfortheTMH.Onthewhole, theBritishauthoritiesseemedtobemorelenienttowardreformistsvis-àvis Sun’ssupporters,SunYat-senhimselfsufferedthehumiliationofbeing deportedin1900foraperiodoffiveyears.1 However,theBritishwereunable tostampoutrisingChinesenationalism,fuelledbypoliticalrivalriesand increasingsympathyforSun’scausebythelocalChinesepopulation.Chinese nationalistfervourboiledoverwhennewsoftheoutbreakoftheDoubletenth RevolutioninCentralChinareachedSingapore.Witharealistic possibilityofaregimechange,thepoliticalrivalsinSingaporemappedout newtacticsandstrategiesforchallengesaheadofthem.
