141 About the author 141 About the Author Ippei Yamazawa received his doctorate in economics from Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, where he is now Professor Emeritus. He has served as President, International University of Japan (2003–6) and President, Institute of Developing Economies/JETRO (1998–2003). He has been a regular participant in the Pacific Trade and Development Conference (until 1999) and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference (until 2003). He was a member of the APEC Eminent Persons Group (1993–95), coordinator of the APEC Study Center Japan Consortium (1995–present), and consultant for the APEC IAP peer review process (on Australia, 2002–3).
