456 25 INDIAN HINDU RESURGENCE IN MALAYSIA Carl Vadivella Belle INTRODUCTION ThecurrentethnicIndianpopulationofMalaysiamaybetracedtotwo majorstreamsofimmigrationthroughouttheperiodofBritishcolonialism; namely,theoverwhelmingmajoritywhowererecruitedundervariouslabour schemestoprovidealow-skilledworkforcewithinthecolonialeconomy, andaminorityoftechnical,professionalandbusinessmigrantsattracted bytheeconomicandcommercialopportunitiesexistinginBritishMalaya. Themainformsoflabourrecruitmentconsistedofindenture(discontinued after1910),1 andtherathermoreinfluentialkanganysystemwhichwas terminatedin1938.2 NearlytheentireIndianworkforcewasimportedfrom theMadrasPresidency,largelybecauseofthecolonialpreferenceforTamil labourwhichwasconsideredsupine,easilycontrolledandmalleable.3 Skilled andprofessionalmigrantsincludedaChettiarmercantileclass,Ceylonese Tamils,Malayalees,NorthIndians,SikhsandprofessionalandartisanIndian Tamils.4 ApartfromanevanescentperiodofunitythroughoutWorldWarII, largelyinspiredbytheleadershipofprominentIndiannationalist,Subhas ChandraBose,5 theIndianpopulationhasexistedasaseriesoflinked sub-communities,rivenbyfissuresofcaste,ethnicity,language,religion and class.6 In general, the Indian labouring communities, comprising approximately80percentofthepopulation,remainimpoverishedand marginalized.7 Theresultant“plantationculture”8 characterizedbyvocational 25RisingIndia.indd456 8/20/083:11:57PM Indian Hindu Resurgence in Malaysia 457 andsocialimmobility,powerlessnessandlackofopportunity,hasbeen increasinglytransferredtoandreproducedwithinMalaysia’scitiesand towns.9 ThecleavagebetweenmiddleclassandworkingclassIndians,initially establishedasaresultofthecircumstancesattendingcolonialstreamsof migration,remainsasfixedandpotentincontemporaryMalaysiaasitwas inpre-warBritishMalaya.10 The2000censusindicatedthattheIndianpopulationinMalaysia comprised1.68millionpeople,amere7.8percentofthetotalpopulation.11 Ofthisnumber,1.45millionpeople,6.3percentofthetotalpopulation, comprisinganoverwhelming84.1percentoftheIndiancommunity, professedHinduism.12 Thischapterwillexaminethetransplantationand evolutionofthiscommunity.Itwilloutlinetheimpactofthemajorinfluences whichhavegivenHinduismadistinctiveMalaysianimpress,andthemore recentresponsestotheescalatingpressuresofMalay/Muslimethno-religious dominance.ItwillsuggestthatwhileHinduisminMalaysiaassumesa seeminglyendlessarrayofparticularisticforms,itispossibletodiscerna faintbutemergingsenseofunitydrivenbycontinuingreformistimpulses. InconclusionthechapterwillexaminethefestivalofThaipusam,notonly asanexampleofaHinduresponsetothechangingpoliticalandreligious realitiesofMalaysia,butalsoasaguidetothecentripetalforceswhichare recastingtheboundariesofMalaysianHinduism. HINDUISM IN MALAYSIA: ORIGINS AND BEGINNINGS Hinduismwas“re-created”13 asasignificantminorityreligioninMalaya as an outcome of the waves of Indian migration which followed the BritishcolonizationandwhichcontinuedupuntiltheveryeveofthePacific War.ThetransplantationandhistoricalevolutionofMalayan/Malaysian Hinduismhasoccurredintheabsenceofthosetraditionalsourcesofauthority —first,thereligiouscentresoflearningormonasticorders(math)which haveprovidedasystemofscripturalhermeneuticsorexegesis,andsecond, aninfluentialdominantorthodoxcaste—thathavehadsuchamarked impactupontheemergenceofHindustructures,beliefsystems,mythology andpatternsofworshipinIndia.14 WhilethemajorityofindenturedlabourersweredrawnfromtheAdi Dravidarcastes,kanganyrecruitmentproducedamorevariegatedIndian communitywithinMalayanestatesandtownsandthusagreaterspreadof socialbehaviourandbeliefstructures.15 Althoughapproximatelyone-third ofkanganymigrantscouldbeclassifiedasAdiDravidar,theremainderwere 25RisingIndia.indd457 8/20/083:11:57PM [18.119.131.178] Project MUSE (2024-04-23 22:02 GMT) 458 Carl Vadivella Belle drawnfromtheentirerangeofnon-Brahmincastes,includingland-owning andcultivatingjatis.16 ThenewarrivalsintheestatesandworkplacesofMalaysiahadno recognizedauthoritativepointsofreferenceandtendedtoautomatically reproducerememberedmoresoftheHinduismoftheirhomeregions.17 Thedeitiesworshippedamongindenturedandlaterkanganyrecruited labourers,andtheritualsassociatedwiththatworship,revolvedaroundthe...
