9 Chapter2 EarlyTwentiethCentury Development ItisimportanttounderstandthecontextofIslamicbeliefand practiceintheareanowknownasIndonesiaatthebeginning ofthetwentiethcentury,inordertoperceivethe intellectual currentsthatoccurredafterwards.Atthetimetherewerethree major manifestations of Islamic religious activity. The first currentwaswidelypopularinsociety,crossingthespectrumof commitmenttoIslambetweennominalandcommittedMuslims. Itconsistedofvisitationstothetombsofholymentoaskfor blessings and intercession, involved the use of charms and amuletstowardoffevil,andpromotedbeliefingoodandbad spirits,whichcouldbecontrolledbyuseofspecialprayersand incantations.Thesecondcurrentwasconcernedwithmysticism, i.e.,spiritualsearchinginwhichtranceswereattainedthrough esoteric exercises, usually reciting the names of God or some piousphrase,suchasthezikir.Theesotericexercises,particularly theratib,inwhichseveralworshipperswouldsitclosetoone anotherandrocktheirbodiesbackandforthinunisonwhile chantingthezikir,werefrequentlyusedinsomesectorsofsociety wheretheyconstitutedacommonformofparticipatoryworship and/orentertainment.Thiscurrentwasstronginthecommitted communityandamongsomenominalMuslimgroups.Thethird 01IndoMuslimp9-26.indd9 2/20/069:53:48AM 10 IndonesianMuslimIntellectualsoftheTwentiethCentury currentwasconnectedwiththegeneralthemesofworshipand behaviourasdescribedintheQur’anandinterpretedbythelegal scholarsofIslam.Theemphasisonformalworshipwaslightly usedbythegeneralpopulation,buthighlyregardedbythose trainedtobescholarsinIslam.Ingeneral,reformmovementsin SoutheastAsianIslamattemptedtodiminishtheimpactofthe firsttwotrendsandraisetheimportanceofthethird. JUSTIFICATIONOFTHEHOLYWAR Inthefirstquarterofthetwentiethcenturytheterritoryknown nowasIndonesiawasmostlyunderthedirectorindirectcontrol oftheNetherlandsandwascalledtheNetherlandsEastIndies. IthadbeenthepolicyoftheIndiesadministrationduringthe nineteenth century to bring all of the territories and ethnic groupsinthearchipelagounderitscontrol.Thatgoalhadbeen attained through diplomatic effort, economic activity, and militaryaction.AttheturnofthecenturytheterritoryofAceh was stillbeingpacified. TheAcehnesedefence, led mostly by religiousteachersandsomelocalgovernmentleaders,identified strongly with Islam, which fortified popular desire to remain independentofanyoutsidepoliticalpower.Acehneseresistance utilized“irregular”warfare,inwhichDutchpatrolsandoutposts wereattackedbysmallbandsofrovingmarauders.Ultimately theDutchweresuccessfulinremovingmosthostileresistance and winning the cooperation of the local territorial leaders, long-timerivalstothereligiousscholarsforleadershipinthe generalpopulation. ThefirstexampleofIndonesianIslamicintellectualthought forthetwentiethcenturyarosefromthisstrugglebetweenthe DutchandtheAcehnese.Oralcommunicationwasstrongatthis timeandsagas,tales,andsermonswereusedtoinvigoratethe 01 IndoMuslim p9-26.indd 10 2/14/06 7:24:57 PM [3.17.174.239] Project MUSE (2024-04-19 11:33 GMT) EarlyTwentiethCenturyDevelopment 11 responseagainsttheDutch.Sagasabouttheuseofthe perang sabil(holywar)inearliertimeswereespeciallypopular,which werefortifiedbysermonsbyreligiousleadersproclaimingthat actionagainsttheDutchconstituteda“just”war.Therewasalso areportspreadthroughoutthecountrysidethatavastuprisingof MuslimsthroughoutoftheworldagainstEuropeanswouldoccur that would be the salvation of the Acehnese. About the turn ofthecenturyseveralpamphletsweredistributed,apparently aspropagandatoreinvigoratethosewhowerewaveringinthe struggle against the Dutch. Since literacy was low it is likely thatthepamphletsweremeanttobereadbythosewhocould read,whowouldthenpassthemessageonorallytogroupsof supporters. Acehnese religious clerics, like the ones who wrote the pamphlets,weremostlytrainedin-countrybyforeignMuslims, oftenArabsfromtheHadramautortheirdescendantsonthe islandsoftheIndianOceanorcoastalIndia.TheseArabscholars taughttraditionalIslamicsciences—jurisprudence,mysticism, Qur’anicArabic,andphilosophy.Somestudents,afterstudying underseveraltravellingscholars,wentontoMeccaforfurther study.Hence...
