HABAKKUK : For dallying with a false god, the bristly prophets promise the worst Jehovah has to offer: scattered mountains, whirlwinds putting their nasty foot down, scabs on the crown of the head and stink where sweet should be, fanners who shall fan all the pleasures out of Babylon, and horses bringing the swift news of arrows and a harvest of human fruit. So, surely, it is not so bad to be cursed with only woe: Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Though more woe unto her who turns to the tulip for its red instruction, who heeds the honey in the honeysuckle, who lounges in the moon’s pale tents. Yes, and woe beyond woe to the one who calls down that white and tender fire to the altar of her bed, to the altar of her heart— and who makes, from some strange verse, some bitter, hasty, discarded draft of God’s, this ink-graven image she will not take in vain. ...
