xv About Abe Zaidan Abe Zaidan was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the Western Pennsylvania coal-mining town of Mt. Pleasant. Following graduation in 1953 from the University of Illinois School of Journalism, he worked briefly as a newsman for WILL Radio in Champaign-Urbana, then entered the Air Force as a communications officer. His first newspaper job upon his release from the Air Force was with the LaPorte (Indiana) Herald-Argus,where he was a reporter and arts columnist.He later worked for the Columbus (Ohio) Citizen and Citizen-Journal, as a reporter and theater/music critic before moving on as editor of a new public affairs magazine in Columbus, The Commentator, which won several awards,including the top magazine award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews for its progressive coverage of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. He joined the Akron Beacon Journal in 1968 as a general assignment reporter with a strong focus on state and national politics. That led to his promotion; as the Beacon Journal’s political editor, he was a political columnist and supervising editor of staff coverage of presidential campaigns in Ohio,as well as at seven national conventions . He was appointed metropolitan editor of the Beacon Journal in 1980 and then became a member of the paper’s editorial board and columnist.
