ix PREFACE There are lots of books about Ottmar Mergenthaler and the invention of the Linotype. This one brings together in one place all the major documents and all the corporate information. It is a time capsule of just about everything the company did. This book exists because of Arthur Leroy Koop Jr. (July 5, 1928–October 25, 1970), Advertising Manager, Mergenthaler Linotype Co., Brooklyn, NY. In 1964, there was an opening in the Linotype advertising department. I was working in the order department and asked for permission to apply. I provided a folder of my college term papers for Mr. Koop. He hired me and made this comment on the folder shown. I hope that I have never let him down. ...
