233 LINOTYPE’S PERIODICALS AND SPECIAL PUBLICATIONS 12 Linotype began publishing a periodical for customers and business prospects in 1904. The first, The Linotype Bulletin was a collection of articles on maintenance, typography, user news, and corporate appointments. By 1912 the Bulletin featured contributions from well-known typographers to showcase the Linotype’s capabilities. Many of the covers and ads were virtually works of art. The publishing schedule was interrupted numerous times during the World Wars and the Depression. Examples of all issue formats are shown here. THE LINOTYPE BULLETIN 1904–1929 The publishing frequency and numbering were quite erratic over the period of the Bulletin’s production . Volume 1, number 1 was published in 1904. No month is listed. It began as a simple newsletter but evolved into a beautiful typographic specimen. Linotype stopped publication in 1929 just as the Depression began and went to a smaller, less graphic newsletter that was less expensive. The only complete set is at the University of Michigan. After 1929, when the Bulletin ceased, until 1936, when Shining Lines began, Linotype produced an interim publication that appeared only four times—1932, 1934 (twice), and 1935. It was eight pages with none of the beautiful typographic specimens that graced the Bulletin’s pages. 236 LINOTYPE SHINING LINES 1936–1938 These small (5 ¼ x 8-inch) 16-page booklets were all text. Edited by Theodore Dreier, they were published monthly and contained short articles.
