Theviewseenhereistheexception.Thetitleinscribed versogivesthelocationas“RioGrandeatFortQuitman .”FortQuitmanwaseightymilesdownriverfrom ElPaso.Theactualfortcannotbeseeninthisviewas itwaslocatedaboutfourhundredyardsawayfromthe river.Undermagnifi ation,thesilhouettedfigu eson horsebackcanbeseenwearingmilitarykepis.Theyare USArmycavalrymenontheUSsideoftheriver,most likelymembersofthe9thUSCavalryRegimentwho reoccupiedtheisolatedadobeoutpostinJanuary1868. The9thCavalrywasoneoftheoriginalfour“Buffalo Soldier”regiments,andtheirserviceatFortQuitman wasspentprotectingtheUSMailandothertravelers againstattacksbyhostileIndians.
