HardemanisdressedinasurplusUSArmyuniformjacketwith USArmy–stylerankinsigniawornoneachshoulder.Thetwo circularobjectsnexttotherankinsigniastrapsarecurious,but theyhavenotbeenidentifiedc nclusivelytodate.Theyarenot standardUSArmyinsignia,andeachappearstobeadeviceshowing astarwithinawreath.Ifso,theymayservetoidentifyhim asavolunteerTexasRangerofficerse vingwithZacharyTaylor’s Army. WhenhewasfinishedwithhisMexi anWarservice, HardemanreturnedtoGuadalupeCounty,Texas,andfarmed onhisplantation.DuringtheAmericanCivilWarbarelyfi teen yearslater,HardemanservedasasuccessfulTexascavalrycommander andeventuallywaspromotedtotherankofbrigadier generalintheConfederateArmy.Attheendofthewar,hemoved toMexico,whereheservedbrieflyasabattali ncommanderin Maximilian’sdoomedImperialArmy.Hardemanreturnedto Texasin1866andworkedasapublicservant.Hewasoneofthe foundersofwhatisnowTexasA&MUniversity.Hardemanis buriedintheTexasStateCemeteryinAustin. Hay’s Texas Rangers) JonesCollection,DeGolyerLibrary,SMU •PhotographsfromtheLawrenceT.JonesIIICollection• •18• F reshoutofWestPointatthebeginningoftheMexican War,SecondLieutenantSamuelBellMaxeywasassignedto the7thUSInfantryRegiment,inMonterrey,Mexico.Maxey stoppedinNewOrleanswhiletravelingtoMexico.Therehehad hisdaguerreotypemadebyJamesMaguire,oneofNewOrleans’s pioneerphotographers.DuringtheAmericanCivilWar,Maxey sidedwiththeConfederacyandeventuallywaspromotedtomajor generalintheConfederateArmy.Afterthewar,hebecamean importantpoliticalfigu einTexaspoliticsandservedtwoterms asaTexasUSSenatorduringthe1880s.Thisistheearliestknown photographiclikenessofMaxeyandispreviouslyunpublished. Inscribedinperiodinkmanuscript onthesilkpadarethe surname“Mr.Robie”andthe location“Austin,Texas.” IsMr.Robiethesubjectof thedaguerreotype,oristhis anearlysignedphotographer’s imprint?Thereisnorecord ofanybodywiththatsurname livinginAustinduringthe late1840s,butrecordkeeping atthattimewasproblematic. OneHiramBlissRobieserved withtheUSArmyduring theMexicanWar,andin1847 hewasstationedinMatamoros ,Mexico,justacrossthe RioGrandefromBrownsville ,Texas.In1857thissamemanislistedinCraig’s Daguerreian Registry(vol.3)asadaguerreotypistinLawrence,Massachusetts. Althoughtheevidenceiscircumstantial,itispossiblethatafterhis dischargefromthearmy,HiramRobieoperatedforashorttime asanitinerantdaguerreotypistinTexasbeforereturningtohis homeinNewEngland.
