Ihadsurelycrossedtheriverhereathousandtimesandhadnevergivenit muchthought.Today,asusual,theSabineappearedstagnantanddirty,like anoversizeddrainageditch. ButthenInoticedsomethingsmaller.Atwiginthewaterdriftedbyand wassoonfollowedbyanother.Thetwigsbobbedinthecurrentandwere sweptbeyondthebend.Thisriverwasnotstagnantatall.AsIrealizedhow swiftlythewaterwasfl wing,Ibegantowonderwhatlaybeyondmyfield of vision.Iwasstruckbyadesiretofollowthosetwigsaroundthebendandsee wherethecurrentled. IgrewupneartheSabineRiverandgraduatedfromSabineHighSchool, butnooneIknewhadevertalkedoftravelingtheriver.Itseemedlikesucha novelideathatIcouldfind aboatandsetofftoexploreasectionofmyhome wherenoneofmyfriendsorfamilyhadevergone.ThenItoldmygirlfriend aboutit.Shecrinkledhernose,noteventryingtoveilherdisgust. “Nothingbutsnakesanddeadbodiesinthatriver,”shesaid.
