23 The General 1958 ThisstorywasfoundamongthepapersleftbyReverendGeorgeThompson, aretiredMethodistministerwhodiedwithoutheirs.Hediedintheear ly 1980satseventy-twoyearsofageafterhavingbeenrunoutofhislastchurch, whenhew asaroundsixty-two,becauseofar umorthathew asknownto lickacorkhereandthere.Apassionatehunter,heoftenenjoyedtellingand composingtalesaboutthestrangerelationshipbetweenanimalsandpeople inthewoods.Somewhoheardthesestoriesinsistedthattherumoraboutthe drinkingwascertainlytruebecausehetalkedlikenoministertheyknewand muchofwhathesaidwasembellishedbeyondreasonandmightindeedhave beentheresultofmorethanalittleimbibing.Folksalsosaidhewasabetter shotthananyministerhadtimetobe. Nooneknowsifthestoryistrueorfalse,butthereareseveralmembers ofsomeoftheolderhuntingclubsaroundSledge,SouthCarolina,whoinsist thateverywordisg ospelandthattheR everendThompsonneverlied—at leastwhenhewastalkingabouthunting. The Reverend Thompson’s Narrative EverybodyhadheardoftheGe neral,butfewhadhuntedwithhim sincehewasapuppy.Hisowner,ReverendEddieChapman,hadtaken tofundamentalisminahardway.TheotherChapmanboysintown—his cousinsandne phewsmostlyoratleastp eoplewhowentbythename TheGeneral 24 Chapman—werefarfromfundamentalismorevenchurchasfarasthat goes.Infactrumorhaditthatanumberofthemwereoutandoutalcoholics whofrequentedallmannerofhonky-tonksandha dnevershadowed thedoorofachurch—mostlybecauseonSundaystheywerewaking upwithahangoverinthearmsofoneoranotherofagroupofdisreputable women. SomefolkssaiditwasbecauseRachelChapmanWhite,Eddie’saunt, waskilledwithherhusband,JacobWhite,inthatw reckjustoutsideof Sledgeinthe1940s.Atragiceventitwas—theyleftbehindthemason,who wasraisedbyoldMrs.White.AndthisafterMrs.Whitehadraisedherown childrenandafteroldmanWhitehadsuccumbedtoaheartattackwhen he was in his midfifties.Itseemslikesomefolksarejustbornunlucky. Well,folkssaid,theC hapmanboyshadturnedtodrinkingbecause theyhadtragedyintheirfamily.ButIsortofdisputeallofthat.Yeahthey didalittlebitofdrinking,butnotallofthem.NowCarl,Eddie’sbrother, wasbadtodrinksometimes.Still,het ookcareofhisfamil y.Andyou knowhowfolkswilltalkinasmal ltown.Andthentherewassoman y ChapmansaroundthatIwasneversurehowtheywereallrelated.Well,at anyrate,oldEddiechoseadifferentpath.HetooktoGod.Butitwasnot thebroadpathtotheLord—itwasthenarrowone. FolkssaidthatreligionturnedReverendChapmanorneryandmean, thathespenthoursandhoursporingoverscriptureandthinkingabout sin.Andthenhestar tedmeetingforbreakfastatDoug’s,thelo calmeat andthree,withotherhardcoreministersofthefaith, thosew hospent hoursandhoursdrinkingcoffeeandtalkingaboutthedeplorablestateof theworldandlistingthosewhoweredirectlyresponsibleforitandwould asaresultfeelGod’swrath. Anditwasso mewhereaboutthenthat hebecameverypickyabout thepeoplehehuntedwith.Theyhadtoberedeemedtohissatisfaction.
