As you know, Senator Fulbright and I co-sponsored legislation last session of Congress to provide for the establishment of the Buffalo National River. We shall again introduce this legislation in the 91st Congress and you may be assured that I shall do everything possible to see that this bill is passed and becomes public law. I appreciate hearing from you, and with best wishes, I am Sincerely yours, John L. McClellan In those days McClellan and Fulbright were two of the most powerful people in the U.S. Senate. On the heels ofthat came a telegram bearing the message that we were on our way. The draft bill replacing S.B. 704 submitted to Senator Fulbright would be designated S.B. 855. Its wording was essentially the same, but the area ofthe proposed national river had been reduced from 103,000 acres to 95,730 acres. The date set for the hearing on S.B. 855 was May 27, 1969, and that set off a flurry of preparatory activity in our ranks. An instruction sheet was mailed to all who might consider making an appearance and/or a statement by mail. In those instructions we were pleased to list as an on-the-scene expediter Ken Smith and also to recognize the hospitality of Mrs. E. C. Johnson.
