PART II THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DECISION ACCEPTANCE WE HAVE set out two interrelated social motives-proceduraljustice and motive-based trust-as the foundation for our model of process-based regulation. For this model to be viable, it is necessary that these two mechanisms actually play an important role in shaping people's reactions to their personal experiences with the police and the courts. The goal of the analyses in part II is to test the importance of each of these social motives in encouraging people to accept willingly the decisions made by police officers and judges, particularly those leading to undesirable outcomes. In chapter 4, we directly address this issue by examining the degree to which procedural justice influences decision acceptance and satisfaction with the decision maker. Chapter 5 examines the same issue, but with a focus on motive-based trust, and chapter 6 brings these two issues together to create a unified model of the influence of social motives. ...
