Acknowledgments This novel was written at strange times and in weird places. I’d like to thank the interior of my car where large sections of this book were hammered out. also, airports, especially hartsfield-Jackson in atlanta, deserve some thanking . But maybe the most unconventional of all is the chicken coop. For some reason, during the spring, I went through a period of taking my MacBook into the coop and sitting on a bench. To this day, I’m not sure why it occurred to me to write there, but I’d like to thank the hens for their cooing and clucking , which sounded like encouragement. on the human front, I’d like to acknowledge my agent, robert guinsler, for all of his patience and support. My family, Kennedy, Walker and nancy always help to make me a better person, which I think translates into better writing. Thank you. For the record, this is a work of fiction, and of course, doesn’t represent anything about my family. lastly, my mother died the day we chose the cover for the book, and I can’t help but think it means something, though I don’t know what. Doris May Crandell was the first person I ever knew who actually wrote poems. She read them to me and I realize this may have had a great deal to do with my own writing.
