Preface This book is one ofthe fruits ofa ten-yeat cooperative research project of the University of Colorado, through the Mesoamerican Archive directed by David Carrasco, and the Great Temple Project of Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia. The conference, "Aztec Ceremonial Landscapes," which took place June 19-23, 1989, at the Museo del Templo Mayor, demonstrated the close collaboration that has been established between both institutions, which have now deepened their commirment to carty out archaeological work in the ceremonial center ofTlatelolco, a site ofhistoric importance. We appreciate the participation ofthe colleagues who throughout the years have cooperated to gain a deeper knowledge of the pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican world and in particular the social and symbolic world of the Mexica. The meetings held at the University of Colorado's Mesoamerican Archive and in Mexico have permitted a more dynamic and productive interrelation among the participants; thus, archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, art historians. historians of religions, and archaeoastronomers have utilized their disciplines ro broaden our knowledge . This book is a sample ofour collaboration, a collection ofsome ofthe research presented during the 1989 summer symposium. We hope that it proves of use to other researchers interested in the pre-Hispanic world. Different disciplines are represented here, a diversity reflecting the character we have tried. to give to our meetings. We would like to thank the generous support of the teams from the Mesoamerican Archive and the Templo Mayor. Without their work to organize the meeting, the event would have been impossible.
