vii Our greatest debt is owed to the contributors to this volume; without their dedication to the cause of the working-class majority of this state and nation, this work would not have been possible. The encouragement, suggestions, and enthusiasm of a number of scholars for this project, including several not among the eighteen authors whose articles are included in this volume, surprised, delighted , and humbled us. Two of our contributors—the Greens—George and Jim, who are related only by their commitment to the cause of those represented in the pages of this work, wisely suggested alternative articles of their own work as well as the work of newer scholars that we should include in order to enhance the volume. We continue to be inspired by the scholarship of, and our friendship with, the practitioners of our art who are represented in these pages. We also owe thanks to the publishers of the articles, particularly to the Southwestern Historical Quarterly from which nine of our selections derived, and the West Texas Historical Association Yearbook, which published two of the articles.
