Author’s Note Almost all facts and accounts in this book come from my direct observations and experiences as recorded in the journal I kept while serving in Vietnam. Some accounts in the book, I heard second hand. In order to maintain the absolute integrity of hearsay stories, conversations or events, I personally verified with at least one primary source who had direct knowledge or actual documentation. In some cases, an event required verification from several sources. When stories, conversations, or events appeared to be obvious or highly likely, but could not be verified , I did not include them in this book. Most of my sources were veterans, because they gave me eye-witness unpublished experiences. Without the telling, these stories would be lost. Sometimes, I referred to people by names other than their own. I did this mostly by their request. The medals listed for each veteran are as that person reported to me. These military men must be honored for their heroism. Yet, there are others equally as heroic, who, for whatever reason, refused their award or had no witness to the display of their courage.
