1 SectionI WORLDWARII—EUROPE Thefirsttwosectionsofthisworktouchuponthewarbothin Europe and in the Pacific. For the European Theater, two papers address the war from very different perspectives: on the ground andintheair.Thefirstanalyzestheepicstrugglethatbeganwith OperationBarbarossa,theNaziattackontheSovietUnion,inJune 1941.ThesecondpaperisthepersonalstoryofasurvivingAmerican airmanfromthe“Bloody100th”BombGroupstationedinEngland, oneoftheinitialunitsengagedintheaerialcampaignagainsttargets inGermanyandNazi-occupiedcountries.Thesetwopapersarevery differentyetarelinkedbythecommonword:sacrifice. Anyreaderofmilitaryhistoryis,indeed,fortunatetohaveapaper bythedistinguishedhistorianCol.DavidM.Glantz,whoreviewsthe massiveconflictintheEastbetweenGermanyanditsalliesversus theSovietUnionthatonlyendedwiththeNazisurrenderonMay 8,1945.Hisgoalistoeducatethereaderastotheimmensityofthe struggleandthenmethodicallyaddresssomeofthemyths,issues,and controversiesthathaveemergedoverthepastsixtyyearsregarding theEasternFront. On the ground, the Soviet armies, supported by the united Russianpeople,metanddefeatedtheNazithrustatatremendous costinlivesandmaterial.Thepriceinlivesfromalltheparticipants makesthissaga,perhaps,thecostliestinallofmilitaryhistory.Inhis paper,GlantzassertsthattheSovietUnionsufferedover35million militaryandciviliancasualtiesthroughoutWorldWarII,animmense pricetopayforasinglenation.“TheGreatPatrioticWar”hasleft anindeliblemarkontheRussiannationthatcolorsitscurrentand futurepolicies. 2 WorldWarII—Europe Thesecondauthor,Maj.John(“Lucky”)Luckadoo,trulyearned hisnickname.Thisyoungairmanwasamongthefirsttoarrivein EnglandwiththeB-17stobeginthestrategicbombingofGermany andNazi-occupiedterritory.Theairpowervisionarieswereeagerto puttheirideastothetestofcombat.Somuchhadtobelearnedat suchagreatcost.Thesacrificesofthesepioneeringaviatorsdidnot matchthecasualtiesonthegroundintheEasternFront,buttheir early losses of men and planes were also incredible, and chances for survival were not very high. The strategic bombing campaign representedtheeffortsbytheUnitedStatesandGreatBritaintomake airpoweranewanddecisiveelementofwar.Theyweredetermined torelievesomeofthepressureontheSovietsandtakethewartothe heartoftheenemytwenty-fourhoursaday. MajorLuckadooprovidesapersonalviewofthebroadstrategyof thecampaign,andofspecialvalueishisperspectiveasayoungairman thrustintoapositionofgreatresponsibilitywithminimaltraining andpreparation.ThesebraveAmericanaviatorshadtoovercomethe skillsofveteranLuftwaffepilots,adverseweather,heavyantiaircraft fire,andfatiguetodelivertheirbombsontarget.Heandothersofhis generationmetthechallenge.Luckadoocreditshissurvivaltopure luck.Onlyfouroftheoriginalfortymembersofhisflyingclasswho wereassignedtothe100thBombGroupcompletedacombattour.His personaltestimonyandgracioussenseofhumorprovidethereader auniqueperspectiveonaerialcombatinEuropein1943.Hesurely earnedhisnickname.
