Tracyrestedmostoftheday.Whenthetimeapproachedtopickup hertwelve-year-olddaughteratschool,shedressed,didherhair,and startedapplyingmakeup.“Iputmascaraonmylefteye,nobigdeal,” shesaid.“WhenIclosedmyrighteyetousetheeyelashcurler,there wasnobodyinthemirror.Iwasterrified.Ithoughttheremustbesomehorse2 .indd145 3/11/052:10:15PM PROFILES 146 thingseriouslywrong.IttookmetwodaysbeforeItoldmyhusband—I wastotallyblindinmylefteye.” Neurologistsconfirmedherworstfear.Itwasserious.Butbeforea diagnosiscouldbemade,Tracyhadtoendurealmostthreeyearsoffacing theunknown,whichcontinuedtochipawayatwhatlittleenergy shehadleft.TestsdeterminedthatOpticNeuritiscausedtheblindness inherlefteyeandreducedvisionintheother.However,fiveMRI’sfailed torevealanunderlyingcauseofTracy’ssymptoms.“Nothingshowed up...theycouldn’tfindanythingwrong.”Tracylaughed.“Ididn’t knowwhattheywerelookingfor,though.”ShelearnedlaterthatOptic NeuritisisafrequentsideeffectofMultipleSclerosis(MS).“Infact, ninety-eightpercentofthepeoplewhohaveitalsohaveMS.Theywere checkingforlesionsonmybrainorspinalcord.”Tracyexplainedthata lesionislikeablister,andthebiggertheblister,theworsetheMS. “Whentheydidn’tfindlesions,theyfinallydidalumbarpuncture andtheresultsshowedpositiveforMS,”Tracysaid.“SinceIdidn’thave lesions,IaskedifIhadthe‘good’kindofMS.Hereplied,‘IwishIcould sayyes,butthereisn’tagoodkind.’” ThedayafterdiagnosisconfirmedMS,inMarch,Tracybeganaquatic therapy.Inthesummer,sheheardabouthippotherapy.“Iqualified foraten-weekgrant.Ilovedridingfromthestart.Icouldtellitstrengthened musclesandimprovedmybalancerightaway.Aquatictherapydid someofthesamething,butridingofferedsomuchmore.Itwasbeing withnature,aplacewhereIwasthenormalone,andaninnerpeace thatcomeswhenyoubondwiththeanimal. “Ihadriddensomeasachild.Theystartedmewithaleaderand twosidewalkers,”Tracyrecalled.Aftertenweeksofhippotherapy,her balancehadimprovedsomuchshenolongerneededsidewalkers.“I believeitwasonlyamonthlatertheinstructorsaidIdidn’tneeda leadereither.Thedaymygrantended,Igotoffthehorseandwentto theownerofthecenterandsaid,‘Youcan’tmakemeleave.WhatdoI havetodotostay?I’lldoanything,I’llpayonaweeklybasis.’Which Idid.” Afewweeksaftershebeganriding,Tracyrealizedherdaughter, Ashly,wasnotaskingtogoplaceswithher.“Ithoughtshewasjustbehorse2 .indd146 3/11/052:10:15PM [18.218.38.125] Project MUSE (2024-04-20 04:44 GMT) TRACY 147 ingconsiderate...
