Preface If there be but a step from the sublime to the ridiculous, there is but another between representing the latter and becoming its object, and I know I run the risk of finding myself in the latter predicament by recording what I have heard told with effect, but which may appear very flat, diluted with the ink of my pen. I know there is no reputation to be made by retailing other men’s wit, however successful, and much to be lost if unsuccessful. These admonitions would have kept me silent if I had no object in view but placing this unpretending volume before the public; for the reader will do me great injustice to suppose I have the vanity to think these reminiscences, of themselves, merit a place before it. The true motive of publication will appear by reading the annexed advertisement. Wishing to say nothing unpleasant to any one, I have to that end, in a few instances, had to use fictitious, instead of real names.
