Jeff, Dixie, Rosalyn, Jack alld Christy Callnol/ . Writing a book is a long, drawn-out and tiresome process that greatly influences the lives of the writer's family and friends. [t is a project which involves months and months of research . That means living with pockets full of notes, and with piles of paper, photographs, magazines and newspapers, books, etc. stacked and scattered everywhere throughout the house. And, on most piles is a scribbled note warning, "Do Not Touch!" The dining room table gets knocked out of commission because it becomes too duttered with paper, typewriters and the like, to be used simply for eating. Writing a book requires a great deal of sacrifice on the part of the author's family . [t means that plans, outings, and fun activities take second place to " the book." Playing "Lion" (a family game) and horseback riding become less frequent. Broken toys remain broken and drippy faucets continue to drip. It means po tponement of special events such as birthdays and Mother's Day and shortened or no holidays. Even the Special Acknowledgment family dog gets neglected. In summer the grass grows to embarrassing heights and in winter, the snow does not get shovelled. Deadlines create worry, tension and loss of many nights' sleep and frequently the author exists only physically. His mind is elsewhere, prodding back in another era. I have been fortunate, indeed, to have a patient, understanding and encouraging family. They have gamely lived th rough all this and have helped me so much in so many ways. Most importantly, they have helped me "keep the faith" and see this long project through to the finish. I could not have made it without them. It is with love and appreciation that I acknowledge on this page my thanks to my family- my wife, Rosalyn , Jeff and Christy-for all the important contributions they have made to the completion of this book.
