Acknowledgments This book is the product of 5 years of planning culminating in the International Congress on the Education of the Deaf (ICED) held in Vancouver, British Columbia. As such, it rests on the work of hundreds of professionals who organized and conducted the congress as well as those who made more than 300 presentations. I especially want to acknowledge the leadership of Claire Anderson, chair of ICED Vancouver, and of Janet Jamieson, Susan van Gurp, and Tane Akamatsu, the members of the ICED scientific committee , who had major responsibility for the congress program. I am deeply indebted to the keynote presenters and chapter authors for their expertise, professionalism, and responsiveness.
