ACKNOWLEDGMENTS No undertaking of the scope of this volume is possible by any stretch of the imagination without the indispensable work of many persons. In addition to the obvious debt owed to the hard-working and productive authors of each of these chapters, and the penetrating syntheses carried out by the special chapter writers at the beginning and end of the volume, the analysts who performed careful work in examining the works of authors within each chapter deserve important mention ; in each case, they took responsibility for reading, questioning, and then drawing together the threads within each group of papers, as well as providing important directions for future research by raising researchable questions for the coming years. To Ms. Lena Mitchell and later to Ms. Felicia Jones of the School of Education and Human Services, Dean's Office, a special thanks is owed for their careful preparation of the manuscript in a form that was accessible to the Press and to the editing which followed.
