Appendix A unia Divisions in the Eleven States of the Former Confederacy The total number of unia divisions in the eleven states of the former Confederacy was 423. The following is a list of the divisions in each state. Division numbers are included in parentheses, if known. Division listings were taken from several sources. The two main ones are Robert A. Hill, ed., The Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers, 7:986–96, and the index cards of divisions from the Universal Negro Improvement Association Records of the Central Division (New York), 1918–59, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library, New York. Another listing appeared in the microfilmed part of that collection on reel 1, series A, box 2, section A16. I cross-referenced these sources, looked up the division names on maps from 1920 to 1930 (because some of these rural communities have disappeared), and eliminated ones that were listed under the wrong state or not found on the maps. Other divisions were added because they were specifically accounted for in Negro World issues from 1920 to 1933. I have also corrected the spelling when place-names were obviously transcribed incorrectly. Some towns had more than one division, and in many cases, these additional divisions were called chapters.
