Erik Christian Haugaard (1923-2009) was a celebrated Danish author and translator of more than twenty critically acclaimed books for young readers . Among his many works of historical fiction are The Samurai's Tale, The Boy and the Samurai, and The Revenge of the Forty-seven Samurai. His books have been awardedthe American LibraryAssociation Notable Book Award, the Boston Globe Horn Book Award, the Jane Addams Children's Book Award, and the Danish Cultural Minister's Prize. In 1974 he translated Hans Christian Andersen's Complete Fairy Tales and Stories, the first collection to present the stories exactly as Andersen had originally collected them one hundred years earlier.
