xi acknowledgments No project as big as a classics and contemporary collection of work is without many people to thank for their contributions and support. We refer the readers to Lynda Stone’s original acknowledgments page for her thank you’s. Here, we must thank Lynda for her encouragement and support in helping to see the book republished. It is great to see all this feminist scholarship in print, and it would not have been possible without Lynda’s cheering us on. The book has been a labor of love for the three of us, but Thayer-Bacon’s research assistant, Tracia Cloud, helped it along in its final stages. Tracia was tenacious in tracking down the straggler copyright permissions and helping us negotiate for reduced rates. She also collected all the pdf copies of essays for us. There are many institutions we must thank for making the authors’ work available at no charge, in particular the Philosophy of Education Society, Caddo Gap Press, the Journal of Education, the Harvard Education Review, and The University of Massachusetts Press. Other institutions offered us copyright permission at a much reduced rate: The University of Chicago Press, Springer Netherlands, Sage, and Taylor & Francis. The Journal of Education, Journal of Negro Education , and Human Kinetics offered us a half rate that made the cost doable. And, both the University of Akron, in particular Sharon Kruse, department head of Educational Foundations and Leadership, and the Department of Educational Studies at University of British Columbia helped to pay for their faculty copyright costs as the discounted amount offered by Wiley-Blackwell was still beyond our means. We are troubled by the loss of important essays we were not able to include due to prohibitive copyright costs, and now recognize this is an issue scholars in our fields of study need to address. Scholarship that is only under the control of for-profit businesses is becoming prohibitive to reprint, thus limiting its availability. Limiting access harms the continuing development of the scholarship. We thank our own institutions, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in particular Steve McCallum, department head of Educational Psychology and Counseling, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for their support of our research efforts. We want to thank Catherine Bernard, senior publisher at Routledge, for while she not able to help us reissue the book with the original publisher, she did release the book and encourage us to submit it elsewhere.
