f o u r TheForgottenEngineersoftheBomb InearlyAugust1945,theblindingflashesthatdevastatedHiroshimaandNagasaki instantlypropelledtheManhattanProjectfromthedeepestsecrecyto thetopofthenews.Oneweekaftertheatomicexplosions,theportraitofthe charismaticJ.RobertOppenheimerwasonthecoverofLifemagazine.The traditionalaccountofthehistoryoftheManhattanProjectgivesstarbilling tothegreatnamesofnuclearphysics.Historianshavebeenfascinatedbythe physicistsandhaveessentiallyadoptedtheirpointofview. Butwhat,afterfiftyyearsofbasicresearch,madeitpossibletomovefromthe firstexperimentalreactorbuiltinDecember1942tothebombsthatexploded abovetheJapanesecitieslessthanthreeyearslater?Whataccountsforthesuccess ingettingtensofthousandsofpeopletoworktogether,ofstampinggiant factoriesoutofthegroundinafewmonths,ofmasteringnewtechnologies inrapidorder?TheManhattanProjectwasnotonlyamatterofcutting-edge researchinnuclearphysics.Italsoposedasetoftechnicalproblems.Itwasan industrialprogram,andthenecessaryknow-howdidnotappearoutofnothing ;ithadbeenforgedoverahalf-centuryoflearningthetechniquesofmass productioninthehigh-pressurechemicalindustry,particularlyatDuPont. NylonandBombs DuPont’sparticipationintheManhattanProjectisknowntotheexpertsin thefield.TheofficialhistoriesoftheprojectnotethatDuPont’schemicalengineers wereinchargeoftheproductionofplutonium,themaincomponent oftheoftheNagasakibomb.1DavidHounshellandJohnK.Smithdevotea fewpagestotheManhattanProject’sindustrialaspectintheir1988bookScience andCorporateStrategy:DuPontR&D,1902–1980,buttheroleplayedby DuPontduringthewarisnotcentraltotheirstudy,whichonthecontrary stressestherelationofscienceandtechnologytothemarketandtoDuPont’s commercialstrategy.2Forthesetwoauthors,asforAlfredChandler,everything political—andwhatismorepoliticalthanawar?—somehowliesoutsidethe subject. Idonotintendheretonarratethedetailsofahistorysimplybecausethis hasnotyetbeendone.SomeofthetechnicaldataIshallexamineareknownto specialists,othersarenot—inparticular,asfarascertainaspectsoftheDuPont organizationanditslinkstotheotherpartnersoftheprojectareconcerned— butmyobjectivehereisverydifferentfromwritinganewgeneralhistoryof theManhattanproject.WhatIhavesetouttoanalyzeisthemannerinwhich DuPont’schemicalengineerswereabletoimposetheirwayofdoingthings andtheirorganizationontheirmilitaryandscientificpartners.Thiswilloffer anewperspectiveontheproject,onethatisnotmeanttoinvalidatetheexisting onesbuttobringouttheirhithertoneglecteddimensions.Thiswasalso donebyThomasHughes,whoestablishesaconnectionbetweentheTennessee ValleyAuthorityandtheManhattanProject,bothbeingjointsystemsofscience andlarge-scaletechnologyoperatingundertheaegisofthegovernment.3 Thedifficultyisthattheindustrialistsareplacedinthebackground,asifthey hadbeennomorethansecondaryplayersintheserviceofthecommissioning agency.Asweshallsee,thingswentverydifferently.
