Preface I am grateful to Shirlee Anne Smith, former Keeper of the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives, Provincial Archives of Manitoba, for initial permission to edit Henday’s journal. Judith Hudson Beattie, present Keeper of the hbca, confirmed this permission, answered many requests, and never lost faith that the edition would appear one day. Glyndwr Williams kindly introduced Don Kennett, Henday’s descendant, who allowed me to draw on his research into the Hendy family records. Ed Dahl, formerly the early cartography specialist at the National Archives of Canada, gave me valuable information on maps and watermarks. Charles V. Fiddler, principal of the Plains Indians Cultural Survival School in Calgary, advised me on the Cree words transcribed in Henday’s journal. Dale Russell shared my interest in this project from the beginning and helped immeasurably. Cole Harris, Frances W.
