The boys they were drunken on powder and wine They came to burn Lawrence just over the line. -From "Quantrill," a ballad collected in Kansas In August 1863 Quantrill led one of the bloodiest guerrilla raids of the war against the town of Lawrence, Kansas. This town stood for everything the Missouri guerrillas hated most. It was the home of the brutal Jayhawker Jim Lane, and many other Jayhawkers used the town as their home base. At dawn on August 21, 1863, Quantrill rode into Lawrence with about four hundred and fifty men. This was the largest group of guerrillas Quantrill ever had under his command during the war. Frank James was one of Quantrill's men on this raid, and so was Cole Younger. Some people think Jesse James might have been with the guerrillas by this time, but most people believe he didn't join them until several months later. For four hours Quantrill's men rode through the streets killing, burning, and stealing. By the time they left, they had killed over a hundred and fifty men and burned much of the town.
