Preface This book emerged from a joint project, “Refracted Colonial Modernity: Japanese Cultural Imperialism and Modern Taiwanese Identities in Art & Design,” which began in 1999 under an umbrella project, “Modernity and IdentityinNon-WesternArt & Design,” now called TrAIN(Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation) at the University of the Arts London. The nine contributors to this volume, all with unique cross-cultural professional backgrounds, joined the project between the Association of Asian Studies conference in 2000 and the conference at the National Museum of History, Taiwan, in 2001. This project would not have been possible without the support of many organizations and individuals in Taiwan, Britain, and Japan.
