Acknowledgments I am indebted to many Indonesians at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the National University of Singapore with whom I have had the pleasure of working over the past several years to complete the two-volume text Let’s Speak Indonesian: Ayo Berbahasa Indonesia. First and foremost I want to acknowledge and thank my coauthors, Erlin Barnard and Lucy Suharni, for their tireless efforts developing these materials. The text is the vision of Erlin Barnard, who initiated discussions about creating communicative materials for the teaching of Indonesian and encouraged me to write a proposal for funding. The execution of good ideas takes a great deal of creativity, hard work, and perseverance; my sincere thanks go to Lucy Suharni for writing numerous dialogues and exercises that exemplify the language functions in these lessons . I am sincerely grateful to other key collaborators who have helped pilot and revise the lessons, especially Amelia Liwe, a superb and experienced language teacher with a solid grounding in pedagogical principles. I express my appreciation also for the assistance of Yosef Djakababa and Sisca Oroh Bolling who worked on the revision and editing of these volumes. The art work (illustrations and photographs) for the Let’s Speak Indonesian volumes is extensive and required the collaborative efforts of many. Jason Klein of the Madison newspapers worked closely with the lesson developers to draw situations that accurately support the exercises. I am truly grateful for generous photographic contributions from Dadit Hidayat, Toni Satriyantono, Erick Danzer, Ivan N.
