Abstract

The domestication of cats changed the possibilities of humanity. For this relationship to be respectful humans need to understand breeds and individuals and work with their nature. This can include training, showing, and work. A pragmatist approach entails understanding the history of domestication and exploring a variety of ways to communicate effectively. It also entails paying attention to how cats' needs change with age and facing the realities of death. Issues of abuse and neglect, use in biomedical, and use in entertainment are also addressed. The debates about declawing and indoor only cats get special attention.
